The video for the track, directed by Mndsgn himself, is inspired by the 70s, especially the whimsical atmosphere and surreal imagery that complements the groove of the song.

“Rare Pleasure” is Mndsgn’s third album to be released on Stones Throw Records. Following 2016’s “Body Wash”, this album shows the evolution from his roots as an acclaimed beatmaker to a singer, songwriter and arranger. Although he began writing for the album back in 2018, the final recordings only took a week in the studio with the help of trusted friends: Swarvy on bass, guitar and as musical director for the sessions, Stones Throw labelmate Kiefer Shackelford on keys, drums by Will Logan, percussion by Carlos Niño, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on strings and accompanying vocals by Fousheé and Anna Wise.

Inspired by soundtracks, samba, exotica and library records from the 70s/80s, Rare Pleasure’s lyrics are drawn from Mndsgn’s family and interpersonal experiences, reflecting on the world at large and from Mndsgn’s formative experiences as a b-boy.

Ringgo Ancheta, better known by his stage name Mndsgn, grew up in south New Jersey, raised with Gospel music at church, and B-Boy culture at home. Experimenting with beat-making, he befriended fellow producer Knxwledge and the two formed the influential Klipmode collective (along with Devonwho and Suzi Analogue). Mndsgn’s music flourished when he moved to Los Angeles, catching the attention of Stones Throw who released his albums “Yawn Zen” (2014) and “Body Wash” (2016).
