Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack – or JuJu and JoJo – from Pearl & The Oysters are not only musical collaborators. They are also soulmates. What started as a high school friendship developed into a creative and personal relationship that spans decades and continents. In another life, Juliette and Joachim made music in Paris, but sometimes felt alienated in the music scene there, as if they were strangers in their hometown. When the opportunity arose, the two travelled to the US.

After a few inspiring and creative years on the East Coast, they headed to Los Angeles where they met up with artists such as Alan Palomo (Neon Indian), Riley Geare (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), Dent May and Alex Brettin (Mild High Club), who collaborated on their first record for Stones Throw, “Coast 2 Coast”. Also from France, Stereolab’s Lætitia Sadier – one of her all-time favourite musicians – also joined Pearl & the Oysters on their new single “Read the Room”.

“We knew we wanted to work with Lætitia right away when we came up with the idea for double lead vocals,” say Juliette and Joachim. “We wanted a heavier guitar track on the album, and in hindsight it was an absurd yet exhilarating experience to record those outrageously loud guitars in our tiny 1-bedroom in Highland Park at the time of the biggest Covid panic. Freedom road!”

“Coast 2 Coast” is the result of several moves and a colourful cocktail of aesthetics and imagery sourced from all over: Barbarella followed by a triple bill of Agnès Varda; the swamps of Florida and the sandy beaches of L.A. under a reflective sun; a radio that picks up a distant station before tuning into an oldies pop station; and rushing waves that melt into the sound of Juliette’s voice.
